Captains Prize

A large field of golfers gathered at Reay on Saturday to compete in the Captains Prize which doubled up as the first qualifying round of the Club Championships. The calm and bright conditions ensured that it was a day of low scores, with no less than 14 players carding nett scores in the 60s.

Lee Parnell has been enjoying some fine form in recent weeks, and he secured yet another visit to the winners’ enclosure after posting a nett 65 courtesy of the lowest gross score of the day, a blistering 70. Two dropped shots at the 5th and 7th holes during an outward half of 36 were soon forgotten after a brace of birdies at the 10th and 13th. One more bogey came at the tricky 17th, but an inward half of 34 ensured Parnell took the silverware by a single stroke.

Runner-up was Ross Munro, who got the defence of his Club Championship crown off to an excellent start with a round of 72 for a nett tally of 66. Birdies at the 5th, 16th and 18th were the highlights of a round made up of matching halves of 36.

Ruari McCartney claimed third place on countback ahead of Tim Hawes after both players posted scores of nett 67. McCartney had a single birdie at the 14th during his round of 79, which was made up of halves of 39 and 40. Hawes produced matching halves of 40 during a steady round which was blighted by double bogeys at the 2nd and 14th holes.

Dunnett Cup - Final Results

Despite the dull and cool conditions, players gathered at Reay on Saturday to compete in the second and final round of the Dunnett Cup. Those looking to apply pressure on first round leader Gregor Munro were left disappointed as the youngster produced a sublime round of 70 for a nett score of 65. His two round aggregate score of 130 was good enough to take the silverware by an impressive 5 strokes from his nearest challenger, Stuart Grieg, who finished on a tally of 135.

After a bogey at the first, Munro rattled off twelve consecutive pars, before a birdie at the long 15th got him back to level par. Three further pars and a bogey at the 17th were good enough for a round of one over par 70, the best gross score of the day.

Second place in Round Two was claimed by another member of the Munro clan, Gregors’ younger brother Euan, with a nett 68. After a shaky start, Euan reached the turn in 42, but showed his class to come home in 37 for a fine gross score of 79. Murray McGlasson, Cammie Ross, and Grieg finished a stroke further back after posting rounds of nett 69.

Ross took third place in the overall Dunnett Cup standings on 136, with David Mackay fourth on 138, and Andy Bain fifth on 140.

Ronnie Walace Open

Reay Golf Club hosted the Ronnie Wallace Open on Saturday and despite the cool and showery weather, a strong field of players battled it out for the prizes. The tough conditions were reflected in the CSS which rose to 71.

Winner of the scratch competition was Tom Ross from the home club. Ross is one of a clutch of excellent young players whose talents are being expertly fostered by the Junior Coaches at Reay, and the 7 handicapper produced a sparkling performance to win by two shots from Gordon Steven of Wick.

Ross got his round off to a fine start with a birdie at the tough second hole and he reached the turn in 36. A steady but unspectacular back nine of 40 was good enough to secure a comfortable victory. Steven produced a consistent round of 78, but will be regretting an ugly double-bogey at the 12th hole which cost him dearly in the final analysis.

The handicap prize was won by Stanley Ross of Thurso who carded a round of nett 69. Ross did his best work during a front nine of 40 and held on to his score with a back nine of 42 to claim the spoils. Gavin Gunn topped Category One following a fine nett 70, with Tim Hawes a shot further back on 71. Andy Bain managed a brace of birdies at the 4th and 15th holes on his way to a nett 72 which was good enough for third place.

John McEwen was the victor in Category Two following a fine nett 71. Three players, George MacDonald, Willie Williamson and Robbie Swanson, finished a shot further back following rounds of nett 72. MacDonald secured second place on countback, with Williamson third and Swanson fourth. Tom Ross also secured the prize for Nearest the Pin at the 18th to cap a very profitable day on the course.

May Medal

Those who played in the May Medal on Saturday could have been forgiven for thinking it was still January, with a biting wind and frequent wintry showers making good scores hard to come by. The tough conditions were reflected in the CSS which rose to 72.

In Category One it was David Mackay who deservedly triumphed after recording an excellent score of nett 69. His gross score of 79 gave him the distinction of being one of only two players in the field to break 80, and it earned him a well-deserved handicap reduction. Cammie Ross was the only other player to post a score in the 70s, and his best of the day gross 78 was good enough to take a distant second place on nett 72. Three players, Alistair Gunn, Evan Sutherland and Colin Munro finished a further shot back after carding nett 73s.

Category Two was a closely fought affair with countback required to determine the winner. Danny O’Hagan pipped Tim Hawes to the silverware after both carded rounds of nett 73. Jock Eunson took third place on nett 75, with Willie Williamson fourth following his 78.
