Aschebster Road Sweep

Members of Reay who were not on Thurso Open duty competed in the Achshebster Road Sweep on Saturday morning in bright conditions.

After a summer which has included hours practicing on the course it has been no surprise to see the handicap of youngster Ewan Crawford come crashing down. Crawford produced another fine display to take victory by an impressive five short margin from his nearest challengers. After a steady start, his round exploded in to life with a birdie 2 at the tough 7th hole, which helped him to reach the turn in an excellent 38 strokes. A second birdie at the 13th soon followed and contributed to an inward half of 39, giving a brilliant nett 64 and securing Crawford a well deserved handicap reduction.
Leading the best of the rest following a nett 69 was Reay stalwart Grant Maxwell. Maxwell reached the turn in 41, with a disappointing 7 at the par 5 5th blighting his card. However an inward half of only 36 blows, which included a birdie at the 10th was good enough for Maxwell to take the runners-up spot on countback.
Another youngster, Gregor Munro, took third place following his own nett 69. Munro has benefited greatly from the tuition he has received from the Reay coaches over the summer and his handicap continues to tumble down. A birdie on the short 15th provided the highlight of his round.
Just squeezed out of the podium was another player who has shown great improvement this season, Steven Mackay. After a steady front nine of 39, Mackay turned on the style in a back nine of 38 which included a birdie at the 12th, and a spectacular eagle at the par 5 14th.
The race for the Jacobs Summer Cup is also heating up, with two rounds remaining. Andrew Adamson remains in front, but members of the chasing pack which includes David Mackay, Lee Parnell, Gavin Gunn, and defending champion Gavin Sutherland, will all be fancying their chances of snatching victory if they can score well in their remaining rounds.
