The beginning of October heralded the start of the winter season at Reay, and players got down to serious business on Sunday with the first round of the Winter League Stableford, which was held in overcast conditions.
Leslie Malcolm has come to the fore in recent weeks with a number of good scores, but on Sunday he found new heights recording a majestic 44 points which left the rest of the field trailing in his wake. Malcolm’s gross score of 79 included 11 pars and 5 bogeys, with a single double-bogey at the 8th the only blight on his card. Handicaps are normally frozen over the winter months, but the Match Committee may be forced to review Malcolm’s current assessment of 18 following such a spectacular score.
Taking second place on 39 points was David Mackay. Mackay has also enjoyed an Indian Summer on the golf course and he maintained his recent rich vein of form, carding a fine gross 76. His round was made up of two halves of 38, with no less than three birdies at the 6th, 9th, and 16th holes. Taking third place a point further back on 38 points was Ian Ross. His score was founded on a fine outward half of 37 which comprised 6 pars and 3 bogeys. An untidy 6 at the 10th derailed his challenge somewhat, but he still managed to cover the inward half in 41 for a fine gross 78. Cammie Ross, Murdo Macdonald, and Greg McEwen were the best of the rest on 34 points.
