Christmas Open Scramble

A welcome break in the weather allowed competitors at Reay to dust down their golf clubs to compete for glory in the Christmas Open Scramble at the weekend.

Taking the glory with an excellent nett score of 56.2, were Jimmy Meiklejohn, Ronald Matheson, and Jack Johnstone from Thurso Golf Club. After a splendid outward half of 32, which included two birdies at the par 5 4th and 6th holes, the trio really turned up the heat with a back nine of 30 which included five birdies in a row between the 13th and 17th holes.

Taking second place were another team from Thurso, comprising Harvey Cowe, Bryan Ronald, and club captain Alistair Simpson. After also reaching the turn in 32 with birdies at the 6th and 8th holes, the threesome could only manage two further birdies at the 12th and 14th holes for an inward 33, and a gross score of 65. Their nett score of 58.0 was not quite enough in the final analysis.
Flying the flag for the home club in third place were a team made up of Kenny Farmer, Alex Mackay and Ian A. Mackay. A disappointing outward half of 37 was soon forgotten after a back nine of 32 which included four birdies at the 13th, 15th, 16th and 17th holes. Despite the late charge their nett score of 58.2 was only good enough for third place. Fourth with a nett score of 59.6 were Ian Ross, John Disbury, and Pete McCartney, with another Reay trio comprising Grant Maxwell, Les Malcolm, and Willie Allan taking 5th place on 60.0.
