Captain vs Vice Captain

The Captain's team win 4-3 to take the trophy for the first time in 4 years

Saturday saw golfers at Reay gather for the eagerly anticipated Captain versus Vice-Captain Match which traditionally marks the start of the summer season.
Despite the blustery wind and cool conditions, twenty-eight players donned their waterproofs to do battle on the links. Newly appointed Greens Convenor Grant Maxwell has been a busy man along with Greenkeeper Jimmy Macadie over the past few weeks, and competitors were pleased to note that swathes of rough have been chopped from the course.
The format of the match saw players arranged in to pairs representing either Captain Graeme Dunnet or Vice –Captain Grant Coghill, and playing four-ball better-ball ties against their foes. In the top match a devastating putting display by Dunnett saw him and partner Colin Munro see off the challenge of Coghill and Alex Anderson by a margin of 3&2.
In a battle of the veterans, Sandy Chisholm and Kenny Farmer secured a further point for the Captain’s side with an impressive win over Ian Sutherland and Murdo Macdonald. However, the Vice-Captain’s charges soon fought back courtesy of victories for Ian Ritchie and John Disbury, who edged out Willie Allan and Bob Earnshaw, and from the in-form Richard McDonald and Hugh Millar who overcame the dogged resistance of Murray McGlasson and the evergreen Keith Buxton.
Steve Efemey and David Mackay were always in control of their tie against Lee Parnell and John Maclean to secure a further point for the Captain’s team, and when Evan Sutherland and Donald Mowat recorded a win against Andy Bain and George Macdonald, Dunnett’s side moved in to an unassailable 4-2 lead.
The final match to finish provided some consolation for Vice-Captain Coghill with Alex Mackay and Stuart Grieg defeating Ian A Mackay and Tim Hawes on the final green.

Winter League Stableford - Final Results

Some glorious sunny weather marked the final weekend of the winter season at Reay as the Winter League Stableford was brought to the most dramatic of conclusions. Players have braved wind, rain and the occasional flurry of snow during the 12 rounds of competition, and in the end it was youngster Ian A Mackay who emerged triumphant following a late surge up the standings. He posted a final round score of 42 points to give a total of 231, which was good enough to pip early pace-setter Leslie Malcolm who finished on 228. Both players deserve tremendous credit though as their respective tallies were well ahead of the rest of the field. The ever reliable Ian Ritchie took a distant third spot on 216, with Sandy Chisholm fourth on 210, and Alex Mackay fifth on 209.
Round 11 on Saturday was won by Simon Harper who has shown some good form of late. His score of 40 points was amassed during a round of gross 71, with most of his good work done during a blistering front nine of 33 which included a birdie 2 at the short 5th hole. A steady back nine of 38 was good enough to secure victory by a single point from Bob Earnshaw and Ruari McCartney. Earnshaw’s round comprised two halves of 38 with birdies at the 6th and 18th holes the highlights of an otherwise fairly steady round. The big-hitting McCartney did his best work during a front nine of 39, with an inward 42 giving him a gross score of 81. If he continues in this vein of form it will not be too long before his scores catch the eye of the handicap secretary.
Ian A. Mackays score of 42 on Sunday was also enough to win Round 12 outright, with Chisholm second on 39. Youngsters Gregor Munro and Tom Ross finished in third and fourth places on 38 and 37 points respectively, just edging out their junior Coach Evan Sutherland who came fifth on 36.

Granty's Greens, Jocks Hoose & The Bar

Latest News from the Council's activities to get the club ready for the new season...

Granty is arranging for another trial on rough cutting using a 5ft Flair Mower (whatever that is!). He's looking for a solution to easing the rough on the course and for that ProV1 that went missing last week!

Grant, Jock and Graeme (with input from their better halves) will be redecorating the entarnce and foyer area over the next week. The notice boards have been removed and will be repositioned appropriately after the paint job. The Ladies locker room door may be removed for painting, but will be rehung by the weekend. Apologies to our lady members for any inconvenience.

Lee is working on sorting out the leaking Bellhaven pipe and may have found a solution in the Comm bar.  Further detailed investigations will take place on Wednesday and Friday night!

Winter Eclectic Final Results

Mighty McDonald
Saturday saw the final round of the Winter Eclectic played over a Reay course which is in fine condition at this early stage in the year.
Sealing victory in the overall standings was Richard McDonald, who crucially managed to improve his eclectic score by a single shot courtesy of a fine birdie at the 16th hole.

His aggregate score of 60 was enough to secure the Jean Mackay Trophy by the finest of margins from Lee Parnell who finished on a tally of 60.5. Murray Mcglasson took third spot on 61, with Ian Ritchie fourth and Sandy Chisholm fifth in the final standings.

The Punt - O Macaco's Nag Sabatical

Now, see if I'd googled "KING + BUDGIE + SMUGGLER" I could just about understand why I was presented with this dodgy mugshot of The Hoff, but the search was "SLOW + HORSE".  Go figure!!!

Can you help?

Dear Abby,
I've never written to you before, but I really need your advice. I have suspected for some time now that my wife has been cheating on me. The usual signs. Phone rings but if I answer, the caller hangs up. My wife has been going out with "the girls" a lot recently although when I ask their names she always says, "Just some friends from work, you don't know them."

Early Spring Texas Scramble

On Sunday Reay hosted its Early Spring Scramble competition which was won by a team comprising Parnell, Mcglasson and Steve Efemey. The trio are gaining something of a reputation as specialists in this format of the game and their nett score 55.8 was good enough to secure a comfortable victory over Kenny Farmer, Alex Mackay and Ian A. Mackay who took second on 58.0. The winners narrowly missed out on posting a gross score of 59 as all three missed a birdie putt from inside 5 feet on the final green.
