A weekend of cold and windy weather took its toll on golfers
playing at Reay over the weekend, with almost a third of competitors failing to
return cards in the competitions held over the Saturday and Sunday.
On Saturday players were vying for glory in the April medal,
and the poor scoring was reflected in the CSS which rose to 71. Taking victory
in Category 1 was club captain Graeme Dunnett, who clearly found the silky
smooth putting surfaces to his liking. His tremendous round of gross 71 was made
up of 14 pars, 3 bogeys and a single birdie at the 6th hole. Playing off a
handicap of 3, Dunnett’s nett score of 68 was enough to win his second
successive April medal by a single shot from Stuart Grieg and Ian Ross.
Taking
second place on countback after a poor outward half of 42 was Grieg, who
knuckled down to cover the second nine in 37, with a birdie at the 16th the
highlight of his round. His nett 69 was matched by Ross who produced two solid
halves of 40 for a gross score of 80.
Winning Category 2 was Willie Williamson who bagged another
piece of silverware following his success in the January Medal. Williamson
produced steady halves of 42 and 43 for a nett 67, which was good enough to win
by 6 shots from his nearest challengers. The group of players who managed to
post nett 73s for a share of second spot included Jock Eunson, Ruari McCartney,
the in-form John Disbury, Murdo Macdonald, and Bill Budding.
On Sunday players gathered to compete in the Hi-Lo
foursomes, which pairs high and low handicap players together to compete as a
team in an alternate shot format of the game. This tricky format, coupled with
some fairly nasty showers meant that good scores were at a premium. Coming out
on top with a score of nett 74.5 were seasoned campaigners Fred Groves and George
McDonald. Simon Harper and Pete McCartney took second spot, with Leslie Malcolm
and Willie Allan third.
