On Sunday Reay welcomed 56
players from Caithness and beyond to compete for glory in the Ronnie Wallace
Open. This competition has been a happy hunting ground for players from the
neighbouring Thurso Golf Club in recent years, and it proved to be once again
with Bryan Ronald taking glory in the scratch competition with an impressive
round of gross 69. Gavin Sutherland of the home club and Dougie Thorburn of
Thurso were next best after both carded scores of 71.
Sutherland had the consolation of
winning Category 1 with his nett score of 68 good enough to win by a single
stroke, ahead of Ron Matheson and Jimmy Meiklejohn of Thurso, and Aly Mackay of
Wick who all posted scores of nett 69.
The Category 2 prize went Harvey
Cowe of Thurso. Cowe has been seen practicing his swing in his back garden over
the winter months, and this dedication to his game has clearly paid off
following a fine round of nett 68. Ruari McCartney took second place on 69,
with Bill Budding completing the podium places following his round of nett 71.
Completing a profitable day for
Thurso members was Syd Campbell who secured a bottle of Whisky for his nearest
the pin effort at the final hole.
