Competitors playing in the Beinn Ratha Trophy at Reay on Saturday were treated to some dull and damp conditions, and the unseasonable weather was reflected in the scoring with the majority of the field struggling to break par.
One player who defied the conditions to record a nett score of 65 was David Mackay, with his superb round good enough to win the trophy by a margin of 3 strokes. After a steady start over the tough opening four holes, his round came to life with a birdie 2 at the short fifth. After reaching the turn in 39, Mackay picked up the pace with an inward half of 36 which included a further birdie at the tricky 17th hole.
A trio of players recorded rounds of nett 68, with Billy Moore taking second spot on countback. Moore has enjoyed an excellent season to date and his handicap will continue to tumble if he can maintain his rich vein of form. Cammie Ross claimed third spot after a fine gross 76, while Ian Ritchie also used his metronomic swing to good effect, recording a gross 77 for his 68. Plus one handicapper Dougie Thorburn once again had the distinction of recording the lowest gross score of the day, a 69 which included birdies at the 6th, 14th and 18th holes.
