Club Championships Final Results

Last Friday night saw the climax of the ladies and gents Club Championship events at Reay with five finals played. The weather remained dry, but a strong breeze from the east and fiery greens made conditions difficult for competitors.

Claiming victory in the gents scratch final was youngster Ross Munro with a hard-earned 3 and 1 win over Lee Parnell. With the tie all square at the turn, Munro claimed the 10th hole to go one up. Over the next four holes Parnell had a number of half-chances to the level the scores, but his failure to convert these opportunities was punished by a birdie 2 from Munro at the 15th which put him two up. After halving the 16th, Munro finished the job in style with a fine birdie 3 at the 17th hole.

The ladies scratch final was also decided on the 17th green with Tricia Macdonald defeating the in-form Carole Cameron by a score of 2 and 1. A closely-fought match see-sawed back and forth, with neither player managing to lead by more than 1up until the decisive blow was struck on the penultimate green. In the ladies handicap final Su Hawes took the scalp of captain Morag Mackay with an excellent 5&4 victory.

The gents handicap final was the only tie to be decided on the last green with Andy Bain just managing to edge out Murdoch Macdonald by 2 holes. With the tie all square after 16, Bain turned on the style to win the final two holes to secure the silverware.

In the senior gents final, club president Fred Groves claimed the glory in a keenly contested battle with Andy MacKay. Groves finished strongly to record a 3 and 1 victory in another tie which was closer than the final scoreline suggests. Following the ties, prizes were presented to the victors by the club captain Graeme Dunnett.
