Players from all over the county gathered at Reay on Saturday to compete in the Doosan Babcock Texas Scramble. Windy conditions and the occasional heavy shower made things difficult for the three-man teams, but in spite of this some good scores were posted.
The top three spots were dominated by teams from the home club. Occupying third place after a nett score of 60.6 were Scramble specialists Steve Efemey, Lee Parnell, and Richard McDonald. The Efemey/Parnell/McDonald combination also had the distinction of recording the lowest gross score of the day, with a fine 65. In the runners-up spot was the team comprising Andy Bain, Cammie Ross, and Donald Mowat. Mowat has enjoyed a very successful season to date and he dovetailed nicely with the steady Ross and the in-form Bain to record a nett 60.4.
The winning combination of Grant Maxwell, Willie Allan, and Leslie Malcolm were the only team to record a nett score below 60, after a fantastic nett 58.2. After a shaky start with a bogey at the first hole, they bounced straight back with a superb birdie 3 at the tough second. Further birdies at the 5th and 6th helped them to reach the turn in only 32 shots. The 10th hole brought the only other bogey of the round, but a pair of birdie 2s at the 15th and 18th holes secured an inward half of 34 for a brilliant gross 66 in the unfavourable weather conditions.
Jason Simpson of Thurso won the prize for nearest the pin at the 18th with a fine tee shot which landed a mere 2.38m from the hole. Unfortunately, neither he, nor his team-mates Ali Simpson and Bryan Ronald could convert their birdie putts.
